Deliberations on Musical Principles in Natyashastra Today

Special National Seminar Marking the Birth Centenary of Acharya Prem Lata Sharma

Varanasi, June 3: The Regional Centre of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), Varanasi, will organize a national seminar on Wednesday on the theme “Major Musical Principles and Practical Aspects in the Natyashastra”, along with the release of the book “Sangeetadhyaya: Jativikalpana (Pratham Pushpa)”. The event is being held as part of the birth centenary celebrations of renowned musicologist and distinguished scholar of musicology, Acharya Prem Lata Sharma.

The programme will commence at 10:30 a.m. at the IGNCA Regional Centre Auditorium, located in the Parshvanath Vidyapeeth Campus, ITI Road, Karaundi, Varanasi. The session will be presided over by Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary, IGNCA.

Suresh Soni, Member of the All India Executive Committee of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), will attend as the Chief Guest. Dr. Sandhya Purecha, Chairperson of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi, will grace the occasion with her special presence.

Among the distinguished guests will be Prof. Ritwik Sanyal, former Dean of the Faculty of Performing Arts, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), and Prof. Anil Bihari Vyohar, former Dean of the Faculty of Music, Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya.

The seminar theme will be introduced by Prof. Krishnakant Sharma, editor of the book. Prof. Sangeeta Pandit, Dean of the Faculty of Performing Arts, BHU, will participate as a Special Guest. The welcome address will be delivered by Dr. Abhijit Dixit, Regional Director, IGNCA Varanasi.

The programme will begin with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and a traditional invocation. This will be followed by the release of the book, addresses by the dignitaries, and scholarly discussions on the theoretical and practical dimensions of music as expounded in the Natyashastra.

The organizers have invited scholars, researchers, students, artists, and members of the public associated with music, culture, Sanskrit studies, and the arts to participate in the event.
