Street Vendors Submit Four-Point Charter to Town Vending Committee Chairman in Varanasi

Varanasi, May 5, 2026:

A large number of street vendors gathered at the Municipal Corporation headquarters on Tuesday, protesting alleged police harassment. Led by Abhishek Nigam, National General Secretary of the National Street Vendors Federation, a delegation submitted a memorandum to Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal.

The vendors cited the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation) Act, 2014, stating that no vendor can be evicted until proper surveys and certification are completed. Despite this, they alleged frequent confiscation of goods and harassment by police.

The four key demands include protection of 63 vending zones, an end to police harassment, revival of a night market under the Lahartara–Chaukaghat flyover, and fair allotment of space in the proposed street food hub.

Taking the matter seriously, the Municipal Commissioner has scheduled a Town Vending Committee meeting on May 8 at 12 PM and assured action in line with the law.
