Street Vendors Protest Against Police Harassment, Submit Memorandum to Municipal Commissioner

Varanasi, May 5, 2026:

A large number of street vendors and hawkers staged a protest at the Municipal Corporation headquarters on Tuesday, alleging continuous police harassment. Led by National General Secretary Abhishek Nigam, a delegation submitted a memorandum to Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal highlighting their grievances.

The vendors stated that under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation) Act, 2014, no vendor can be evicted without proper survey and certification. Despite this, they অভিযোগ ongoing confiscation of goods and harassment by police.

They also submitted a four-point demand to the Town Vending Committee, including securing 63 vending zones, stopping police harassment, restarting the night market under Lahartara–Chowkaghat flyover, and ensuring fair space allocation in the proposed street food hub.

The Municipal Commissioner assured action and scheduled a Town Vending Committee meeting on May 8 to address the issues.
