Shivling-Inspired Civic House on Ganga Theme to Rise in 12 Months in Varanasi

₹96.99 Crore High-Tech Municipal Building at Sigra to Feature 180-Seat Modern Council Hall

Varanasi: The process for constructing a state-of-the-art municipal council building at Sigra has gained momentum, replacing the old and dilapidated structure in the Nagar Nigam campus. On Wednesday, Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari and Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal formally inaugurated the construction work with traditional rituals, following the virtual foundation stone laying by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 28.

The Mayor stated that the project is being realized under the inspiration of the Prime Minister and the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The executing agency, C&DS, has been directed to complete the construction within 12 months while maintaining high quality standards.

With an estimated cost of ₹96.99 crore, the upcoming building will reflect the cultural identity of Kashi. Designed on a Ganga theme, the B+G+4 structure will take the symbolic shape of a Shivling, making it architecturally distinctive.

The ground floor will house essential facilities including a record room, cash counters, meeting rooms, and a green room. The first floor will feature a modern council hall with a seating capacity of 180 corporators, along with departments such as Environment, Licensing, and Judicial. The second floor will accommodate offices of the Mayor, Municipal Commissioner, senior officials, and a conference room, while the third and fourth floors will be dedicated to various administrative departments.

Future-Ready Infrastructure

The foundation of the building has been designed to support expansion up to seven floors, though the current plan includes construction up to five levels including the basement. Spread across 12,000 square meters, the complex will offer facilities such as lifts, a union hall, police outpost, bank, post office, server room, public relations office, canteen, and tax collection center.

End to Dependence on Town Hall

Currently, in the absence of a large hall, municipal meetings are held at the Town Hall. The new building, with its spacious council chamber and modern conference facilities, will provide significant relief to corporators and officials.

The Mayor added that the project is being developed in line with the dignity and heritage of Kashi and is expected to become a milestone in delivering improved civic services to citizens.
