Sarnath Site Officially Recognized as First Identified by Babu Jagat Singh

Varanasi After an extensive study of authentic documents and primary historical evidence related to Varanasi, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), New Delhi has officially acknowledged that the historic site of Sarnath was first brought to light through excavations initiated by Babu Jagat Singh in the late 18th century.
In recognition of this finding, a newly revised stone plaque was installed in the Sarnath complex on 10 February 2026 (F.No. T-17/10/2024-EE). Earlier, on 26 December 2024, another updated plaque was placed at the Dharmarajika Stupa site.
The recognition comes after years of research by the Babu Jagat Singh Royal Family Project Research Committee, which presented verified historical records to the ASI, correcting a long-standing colonial-era interpretation.
According to Pradeep Narayan Singh, a sixth-generation descendant of Babu Jagat Singh and patron of the research committee, the acknowledgement of his ancestor’s contribution is a matter of pride not only for the family but also for Varanasi and the nation’s historical heritage. He added that the research work is ongoing and more historical findings will be shared in the future.
Historians believe that this decision gives a new dimension to the history of Sarnath and highlights the role of local contributors in India’s historical legacy.
