Deliberations Held on Realising the Vision of a Beggar-Free Varanasi; Assistive Devices Distributed to Divyangjans

Varanasi, A seminar on the theme “Beggar-Free Varanasi” and an assistive device distribution ceremony under the Vayoshri Scheme were organized on Sunday at Apna Ghar Ashram, 

Varanasi. Experts deliberated on issues related to the eradication of begging, rehabilitation, skill development, and welfare of persons with disabilities.

The Chief Guest of the programme was District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar, while Chief Development Officer Prakhar Singh attended as the Guest of Honour. The event was presided over by O.N. Upadhyay.

During the seminar, speakers discussed the causes of begging, measures for its prevention, challenges in rescue and rehabilitation, skill-based rehabilitation models, the Government of India’s SMILE Project, and the concept and outcomes of the “Beggar-Free Varanasi” initiative. Eminent speakers included Anil Jajodia, Ravi Upadhyay, former NCERT Director and Dean of Research, District Social Welfare Officer Girish Dave, Dr. K. Niranjan, and Ashish Jha, Director of CRC Varanasi.

The programme also featured an awareness session on the Vayoshri Scheme, followed by an interactive question-and-answer session. Subsequently, the Chief Guest distributed assistive devices to persons with disabilities. Individuals rehabilitated from begging and participants associated with various skill development programmes were also felicitated for their achievements.

Speakers emphasized that the eradication of begging cannot be achieved through administrative efforts alone and requires active participation from society, voluntary organizations, and citizens. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks followed by refreshments.

The event was held at the Apna Ghar Ashram campus on Samne Ghat–Garhwa Ghat Road and witnessed significant participation from social workers, government officials, persons with disabilities, and representatives of various organizations.
