Man Arrested for Rape on Pretext of Marriage in Varanasi

Varanasi: The Ramnagar Police of Varanasi Commissionerate arrested a wanted accused in connection with a rape case registered on the complaint of a young woman alleging sexual exploitation on the pretext of marriage.

According to police, the accused, identified as Sonu Prajapati (24), a resident of Amra Khaira village under Rohania police station limits, was arrested on May 23, 2026, from in front of St. Stephens School near Sahitya Naka in Ramnagar.

Police said that based on the victim’s written complaint, a case bearing Crime No. 0099/2026 was registered at Ramnagar Police Station on April 14, 2026, under relevant sections 64(2), 351(4), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

During the investigation, the accused was traced with the help of the Surveillance Cell and local intelligence inputs. The arrest was made as part of the ongoing campaign against crime and criminals being conducted under the directions of the Police Commissioner, Varanasi.

The operation was carried out under the supervision of the DCP Kashi Zone, ADCP Kashi Zone, and ACP Kotwali, led by Ramnagar Station House Officer Sanjay Kumar Mishra.

The police team involved in the arrest included Senior Sub-Inspector Kaushalendra Bahadur Singh, Sub-Inspectors Jai Prakash Singh, Amit Yadav, Pankaj Kumar Mishra, Constable Gaurav Bharti, and Surveillance Cell Constable Ashwini Singh.

Police said further legal action against the accused is underway.
