Antenatal Check-ups Conducted, 1.17 Crore High-Risk Pregnancies Identified
New Delhi: Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Jagat Prakash Nadda, has hailed the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) for transforming maternal healthcare in India as the flagship programme completed ten years on June 9, 2026.
Launched on June 9, 2016, PMSMA has provided more than 7.5 crore antenatal check-ups across the country and helped identify over 1.17 crore high-risk pregnancies, enabling timely medical intervention and better maternal outcomes.
The minister said that under the programme, pregnant women receive free and quality antenatal healthcare services on the 9th day of every month at designated health facilities. He noted that the initiative has played a significant role in strengthening maternal healthcare delivery and ensuring safer pregnancies.
According to the latest data, India’s Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) has declined to 87 per one lakh live births, while institutional deliveries and antenatal care coverage have witnessed substantial improvement.
Nadda emphasized that the combined efforts of PMSMA, Janani Suraksha Yojana, SUMAN, Ayushman Bharat, and other flagship health programmes have significantly enhanced maternal and child health indicators across the country.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, he said the objective is to ensure that every pregnant woman receives timely, respectful and quality healthcare services, and that preventable maternal deaths are eliminated completely.
