Drug Traders Seek Leniency on Show-Cause Notices in Varanasi

Varanasi, June 9: The Drug Traders Committee, Varanasi, has expressed concern over show-cause notices issued to several medicine shops following recent inspections and has urged the Food Safety and Drug Administration to adopt a fair and sympathetic approach.

Committee General Secretary Sanjay Singh submitted a representation to departmental authorities, requesting that affected establishments be given sufficient time to rectify documentation-related deficiencies, including rental agreements, area specifications, and sales records.

The committee stated that the inspection drive was aimed at curbing the misuse of codeine-based medicines and verifying fake or non-operational drug outlets. Since the establishments served with notices are functioning at their licensed addresses and were found operational during inspections, they should not be treated as fake or non-existent entities.

The committee has appealed to the department to provide an opportunity for compliance and avoid harsh actions such as suspension or cancellation of licenses. Copies of the representation have also been sent to senior officials of the Food Safety and Drug Administration and the Organization of Chemists and Druggists Associations, Uttar Pradesh.
