Varanasi: Goonda Act Proceedings Quashed, Accused Granted Relief

In a significant development in Varanasi, proceedings initiated under Section 3(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Control of Goondas Act against an accused in Case No. 150/2025 (State vs. Ravi Sonkar), Police Station Cantt, have been quashed by the Additional Police Commissioner.
The action was originally based on two criminal cases registered against the accused. Defense counsels Shashank Shekhar Tripathi, Ashutosh Shukla, and Rajesh Trivedi argued that merely two cases are insufficient grounds to declare someone a “goonda” under the Act.
Relying on the judgment of the Allahabad High Court in Govardhan vs. State of UP, the authority observed that two cases alone do not justify proceedings under the Act. After examining the facts, the notice was set aside and the proceedings were dropped.
The order is being viewed as a significant development in legal circles.
